Pandit Ashis Sengupta is a dynamic, versatile Tabla player and belongs to the Banaras gharana. He received his initial training from his father Shri Ranjit Kumar Sengupta and was later groomed by Pandit Nanku Maharaj, Pandit Mahapurush Mishra. His highly aesthetic perception of the Tabla has enabled him to reach the most profound depth of this extra-ordinary instrument and express a range of emotions.
Pandit Ashis Sengupta has innovated to the various rhythmic compositions learnt from his Guru-s. He is also blessed with a lot of traditional compositions, Stotra-s and varieties of Gat-s from the great Guru-s.
A most sought after artiste and a recipient of ‘Taalmani’ award, Pandit Ashis Sengupta is well versed in the art of playing variations of compositions. His accompaniments are marked by rare sense of aesthetics, grace and unexcelled sweetness. Pandit Ashis Has travelled extensively all over India and abroad for his performances and Tabla workshop cum Lecture-demonstration under the aegis of numerous organizations. Apart from his extensive global tour Pandit Ashis has perticipated India festival in Moscow, Germany, France, Holland UK, USA and Canada. He has had the good fortune to accompanying some of the very distinguished Hindustani musicians of today as well as of the past like Pt. Nivrutti Bua Sarnaik, Pt. Mallikarjun Mansoor, Smt. Gangubai Hangal, Smt. Sunanda Pattanayak, Pandit Manilal Nag, Vidushi. Girija Devi, Pt. L.k. Pandit, Pandit Rajan and Sajan Misra, Vidushi Arti Anklekar, Pt. Gokulotsav Maharaj, Ustad Rashid Khan, Pt. V. G. Jog, Pt. Vinayak Torvi, Pt. Ronu Majumder, Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and Pt. Kaivalya Kumar, Pt. Venkatesh Kumar, Pt. Shantanu Bhattacharyya and Pt Jayateerth Mevundi to name a few.
Apart from playing Tabla, the most unique thing in his musical career is his wonderful compositions of Bhajans and music arrangement for the light-classical music compositions which are recorded by many reputed audio-video companies. He has been fortunate enough to work with great play-back singers of Bollywood like Sadhna Sargam, Babul Supriyo and Kavita Krishnamurthy to name a few.
He has written two books on Tabla named "Facets of Tabla Playing" and "Mridangam to Tabla…..a journey". He has also written many articles on muisc, which have been released, to his credit in numerous journals. Recently he has been awarded with "Senior Fellowship" by Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India for being an outstanding artiste.
